πŸ‘« Age Differences in Marriage: Why do Women tend to Marry older men?

The age difference between a man and woman is an important factor when it comes to marriage. The average age at first marriage for men has been increasing over the past several decades, while the average age of first marriage for women has remained relatively stable. In addition to this trend, there are many other factors that influence whether or not people choose to get married.

A new study by researchers from North Carolina State University and the University of Texas at Austin found that women over 30 years old were more likely to be involved in a relationship with an older man, while men above 40 were more likely to date or marry a woman under 30.

The findings are part of a larger project called β€œWho Marries Who: The Role of Age and Gender on Marriage Patterns” funded by the National Science Foundation.

The research was published online today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

“We wanted to see if there was any difference between how married couples behave,” said co-author Dr. Richard Wimmer, professor of psychology at NC State. “Our results show that women tend to engage in more positive behaviors toward their partner when they’re older. They stay together longer, are less willing to leave their partners, and are less likely to cheat.”

But things don’t always go as planned for people looking to start a family later in life. Older women often face discrimination from potential suitors, particularly men, according to a report released last year by the Pew Research Center.

And even though women may have more options now than ever before, many choose not to become parents until much later in life. In 2012, about half (51 percent) of all American women aged 40 to 44 had never been pregnant, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Still, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean younger women aren’t also choosing not to have children. About one out of every three women ages 25 to 29 has either never been pregnant or given birth.

The age difference between a man and woman is an important factor when it comes to marriage. It can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the situation. In some cases, it’s best for both parties if they are not too far apart in age. But there are other times where a couple should consider themselves lucky if their ages are similar.

According to the CDC, the average age at which women first give birth is 27.5 years old. That means that just because someone is single doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t interested in starting a family down the road.

“People don’t always realize that there’s a huge population of women who want to get married but haven’t met the right guy yet,” says Dr. Jennifer Berman, senior director of medical education at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “These are women who might be ready to have a baby, but they’re not having babies yet because they’ve either been waiting to meet the right person or they’ve decided to wait until they’re ready.”

Berman notes that some women β€” especially those who are already financially stable β€” can delay having kids until they feel comfortable enough to take care of a child. Others have chosen to put off motherhood due to a number of reasons, including career ambitions and personal goals.

“There are so many different factors that come into play when you decide to have or not have kids,” Berman explains. “It’s really important to talk to your doctor about what would work best for your situation. It’s OK to think about these things ahead of time.”

To help patients weigh their options, Berman recommends talking to friends who have gone through similar experiences.

“Sometimes we do make decisions based on our own desires rather than recognizing how other people will react to them,” she adds. “If you know someone who has made a decision like yours, ask yourself why they did it. Was it something they felt strongly about? Did they feel pressured into making that choice?”

Another key piece of advice is to consider whether you’d be happy being a parent when you’re older. According to Berman, while it’s true that older mothers often experience lower fertility rates and more health problems during pregnancy and childbirth, they tend to enjoy raising children once they’re born.

“A lot of times people assume that if they were going to have kids they wouldn’t mind getting pregnant at an advanced age,” Berman says. “The reality is that most women really love having kids.”

She notes that although women over 40 may face additional challenges, such as dealing with infertility issues or coping with aging bodies, they still tend to find parenting rewarding.

“I’m sure there are women who are thinking about having kids later in life and feeling that pressure, but I think it’s safe to say that the majority of women are very excited by the prospect of becoming parents,” Berman says. “They see themselves as being good parents, and they look forward to the day when they’ll finally have the chance to fulfill that dream.”
